Cavedago, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: the medieval Chiesa or Chiesetta di San Tommaso Apostolo (Church of St Thomas the Apostle) stands on an upland site, above Cavedago’s scattered farmsteads, that offers panoramic views of rugged Brenta Dolomite peaks. The church was once an essential wayside halt for pilgrims and other travellers using the route through the Val di Non linking the German-speaking North Tyrol to Italian areas to the south, such as Lake Garda. The former parish church, now a cemetery chapel, was founded in the mid-1300s, and it retains external and internal 14th century frescoes, a Romanesque bell tower with a pyramid roof and ribbed Gothic vaults over the nave. Alterations in the Renaissance era included a west portal inserted in 1546. The fresco remnants on the west front, now protected by a pillared portico, include a massive depiction of St Christopher, patron saint of travellers, with the Christ Child on his shoulder, believed to be by a mid-14th century itinerant Lombard painter known as the Maestro di Sommacampagna. Wayfarers using the ancient Roman imperial road through the valley would have paused to pray to San Cristoforo to protect them from sudden death or harm. In the early 1900s, fire destroyed the church roof and endangered the building’s structural solidity. It re-opened after repairs, but then in 1974 lost its role as the parish church to the Church of San Lorenzo in Cavedago town centre. Major restoration work between 1999 and 2002, supported by extensive research into the building and its artworks, succeeded in restoring San Tommaso to its former glory. D1103.B3175
