Following the death of the Queen Mother in 2002, a monument designed by architect, Ptolomy Dean was erected in St Paul's Walden churchyard to mark her connections with the village. The Queen Mother was baptised here and was recorded on her birth certificate as being born here at her local family home, St Paul's Walden Bury. It is now believed that she was actually born in London (possibly in an ambulance). She spent much of her childhood either here or at her father's family seat, Glamis Castle in Scotland and spent part of her honeymoon here, returning for visits frequently throughout her life. The monument's plinth records the four periods of her life, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Duchess of York, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
