Palm oil has become the most widely used vegetable oil. It is found in a vast range of products including food, cosmetics, and house hold products. It has become the most widely used vegetable oil. Palm oil is also considered a viable alternative to natural fossil fuels and could be used as a biofuel in the automotive industry. Once it was realized that Palm oil is a far cheaper alternative to other products such as olives the demand has risen dramatically and continues to do so to the point where Palm oil plantations are springing up in many countries particularly in the the SE Asia region. However this is at the expense of jungles and forests, which were once the habitat to a vast variety of flora and fauna including many endangered species of wildlife such as the orangutan, tiger, elephant and rhino. Other impacts from deforestation on the environment, which raise many concerns, include soil erosion, pollution, and impact on the water systems.
