Carlow Castle is located in Carlow Town near to Irelands River Barrow. Built between 1207 and 1213, by William Marshal the elder, it was the first of its kind in Ireland, a huge towered keep, surrounded by four smaller towers at the corners of the walled rectangle. For the first 400 years, ownership changed frequently, and it was often attacked by Irish Clans. Then Oliver Cromwell's army attacked in 1650 leaving the castle damaged, but still usable. In 1814 a physician called Middleton, leased the building for use as a lunatic asylum. Wishing to make the structure more appropriate to his needs, he used gunpowder and brought down most of the castle leaving just the west wall and two towers. Mr Middleton's folly has become the town's monumental eye-catcher. This image appears in "Irish Follies and Whimsical Architecture" by George Munday and published by O'Brien Press in Dublin.
