GERMANY. BERLIN. FRIEDRICHSHAIN-KREUZBERG. THE EAST SIDE GALLERY IS A 1.3 KM LONG OPEN-AIR MUSEUM WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAINTINGS MADE ON THE OLD BERLIN WALL. AFTER THE FALL OF THE WALL, 118 ARTISTS FROM 21 COUNTRIES BEGAN TO PAINT A GIGANTIC FRESCO ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE WALL, UNTOUCHED BY THE TIME OF DIVIDED GERMANY. SOME OF THESE WORKS HAVE SINCE BECOME ICONS, SUCH AS THE KISS EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE RUSSIAN LEADER, LEONID BREZHNEV, AND THE LEADER OF THE GDR, ERICH HONECKER (RUSSIAN ARTIST: DMITRI VRUBEL). BUT IN TWENTY YEARS, POLLUTION, GRAFFITI AND THE WEAR OF TIME HAD SOMETIMES DESTROYED THESE PAINTINGS FOREVER, WHICH HAVE SINCE TAKEN ON CONSIDERABLE HERITAGE VALUE. THIS IS WHY THE CITY OF BERLIN TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO INVITE, DURING THE SUMMER OF 2009, FORTY ARTISTS OF THE TIME, COMING FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, WHO WERE INVITED TO REPRODUCE THEIR WORK, LINE FOR LINE, AS THEY ARE.
