The choir dates from Norman times but was rebuilt by Abbot Knowle in the 14th Century. The choir stalls were added in the 16th century by Abbot Elyot. The choir stalls illustrated here date from the 19th century. Some of the wonderful 16th century misericords are incorporated on the underside of the choir seats. The monks were required to stand and the misericords gave them some support during the long services.
