The Vatican, Rome, Italy - October 2011; The Vatican in Rome, Italy, is the spiritual and temporal heart of the Roman Catholic Church. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and one of the largest churches in the world. Catholic tradition holds that the Basilica is the burial site of St. Peter, one of Christ's Apostles and also the first Pope; supposedly, St. Peter's tomb is located directly below the high altar of the Basilica. Here we see the monumental statue of a belligerent St Paul in front to themain entrance to the Basilica. It was sculpted in 1838 by Adamo Tadolini, and replaced a much older statue which stood on the same spot. The replaced, older statues of Sts. Peter and Paul were the work of Paolo di Mariano and his workshop (1461-1462), and currently reside in a room of the Library of Sixtus IV, in the Apostolic Palaces.
