To one side of the harbour in Helvick, a fishing port in the small, Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area of County Waterford called An Rinn is an obelisk in memory of the crew of "Erin’s Hope". An American ship carrying ammunition, arms and men to Ireland to aid the Fenian Brotherhood in 1867, it managed to evade British authorities on several occasions. Arriving off Helvick on a foggy morning, they spotted a local hooker hauling fishing nets and persuaded its skipper to land 32 Fenian rebels on a beach near Ballinagoul pier. Just as the men clambered ashore the fog lifted and George Jones, the coastguard in Helvick, saw what was happening and alerted the Royal Irish Constabulary, who set out in pursuit and 27 of the American Fenians, were arrested and imprisoned for entering the country under suspicious circumstances. The obelisk appears in "Irish Follies and Whimsical Architecture" by George Munday and published by O'Brien Press in Dublin.
