The Berlin Cathedral is the largest Protestant church in Germany and a must for visitors. The cathedral was built from 1894–1905 on the Spree island according to the plans of Julius Raschdorff, and was both the main Prussian Protestant church and court church of the ruling Hohenzollerns. The richly decorated building of Silesian granite – with the dome cross – once stood 114 meters high. The outer dome structure, which was damaged extensively during World War 2, was rebuilt with a simplified cupola and spires between 1975 and 1982. The main dome with the cross is now only 98 meters high. The costly restoration of the interior was completed in 1993. --- The Lustgarten, the garden plaza in front of the cathedral, has changed form many times over its four hundred year history. On September 24, 1999, it re-opened in its present form – designed according to original Schinkel plans and equipped with a new fountain.
