A top view of a vintage nineteen fifties tin of Rowntree's 'Dairy Box' – the metal box contained an assortment of milk chocolates including their famous Aero. In 1862, Rowntree's was founded in York by Henry Isaac Rowntree, a Quaker, who acquired an old iron foundry and moved production there. In 1881 Rowntree introduced Fruit Pastilles and the product proved to be a great success. In the 1890s Rowntree was transformed from a small family business into a large-scale manufacturer, as sales more than quadrupled with an increased demand for confectionery. In 1893 the company introduced Rowntree's Fruit Gums and in 1899 Rowntree introduced its first milk chocolate block. The British public's preference continued to move towards milk chocolate and Rowntree struggled for that market in the 1920s. But in 1931, under marketing manager George Harris, the firm recovered in the 1930s. The 'Black Magic' assorted chocolate box was launched in 1934 and Aero (an aerated milk chocolate) and Kit Kat were launched in 1935. In 1937 their Dairy Box of assorted milk chocolates was launched. Continued success meant that, when it was acquired by Nestlé in 1988, it was the fourth-largest confectionery manufacturer in the world. The Rowntree brand continues to be used by Nestlé's on sweet brands such as Fruit Pastilles and Fruit Gums – a vintage nineteen fifties item for editorial use only.
