The red squirrel has remarkable skills. DOUNE; SCOTLAND: FUNNY images show acrobatic red squirrels appearing to fly like Superman while chasing each other through a forest. The red squirrels were on a snack-stashing mission and got very competitive while trying to find as many nuts as possible and hide them from each other. In the images, the squirrels are pictured leaping with incredible agility. Squirrels rely on hazelnuts and pine nuts as a food source and hide them in ?larders? they make in tree hollows. Much rarer than American grey squirrels, native red squirrels could sadly become extinct in the UK in the near future, according to conservationists. The images were captured by Martin West (39) a Television Producer from London who waited patiently for an hour in a wildlife hide in Doune, Scotland, before the squirrels finally showed up. He used a Sony A1 camera with a 600mm zoom lens and was standing 10 ft away from the squirrels. ?They look so funny, like they are a superhero ? Spiderman or Superman, ? he said. ?It was an amazing experience. We don't have many places that have red squirrels any more in the UK so it is magical to see them running around the forest.? He said other people had told him the ?poses are hilarious? and called the squirrels ?cute?. In total, there were three red squirrels and Martin said he watched them chase each other and stash their nuts in different areas close to the hide. However, catching them in action was actually quite tricky so Martin was thrilled when he checked his camera and the images had come out so well. ?I felt really satisfied as they are incredibly quick and so it is difficult to catch them before they've flown, ? he said.
