Religious fundamentalism in India is associated with the Ayodhya issue. Hindu militant parties advocate Hindutva, an ideology that seeks to define Indian culture in terms of Hindu values. These parties (eg. BJP ) began to have electoral success in 1989 capitalizing on anti-Muslim feeling by calling for the erection of a Hindu temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh in northern India on a site on which in the best medieval traditions the Babri Masjid (mosque) was built on the foundations of a razed Hindu temple. In 1991 thousands of rampaging activists tore down the Babri mosque. There was unprecedented rioting across the country.There's the core of the controversy: who owns the spot where the Babri Masjid stood, the majority Hindus or the minority Muslims of India. Today, supporters and affiliates regularly demand that a temple has to built on the site of the razed mosque.
