Rye, East Sussex, England, UK: the Landgate, the only one of Rye’s four medieval gateways to survive, was built from about 1340 after King Edward III made grants to further fortify the town against attacks by the French. The top storey dates from 1380. This view, from East Cliff, shows the rounded inner (south-eastern) face of the arch, which was once flanked by two buttresses. The western buttress has now disappeared, but a trefoil-headed lancet window still pierces the rubble stonework above and to the left of the green and gold clock face. On the north-west or outer side, two round towers on moulded plinths flank the pointed central arch, which has a chamber above it and is still grooved for the portcullis that was raised or lowered to control access to the town. The towers, pierced by rectangular loopholes, are accessed by pointed doorways in the reveals of the inner arch. The gateway was built after Rye returned to English rule following a lengthy period under French control. The town was regenerated and refortified with newly built or repaired defences including the Strandgate, the Baddings Gate, the Postern Gate and the Landgate, as well as a small castle to the south-east later known as the Ypres Tower. Most of the Rye Town Wall that linked the gateways has now disappeared, but traces of it survive on either side of the Ypres Tower and a substantial stretch is still in place between the Landgate and Conduit Hill.
