Chinese workers release the ship cable of the newly-built deepwater pipelaying crane vessel Hai Yang Shi You 201 leaving the Port of Qingdao for the South China Sea, in Qingdao city, east Chinas Shandong province, 21 May 2012. Hai Yang Shi You 201, Chinas first deepwater pipelaying crane vessel, set sail for the Liwan 3-1 gas field in the South China Sea on Monday (21 May 2012) from the eastern Chinese coastal city of Qingdao. Hai Yang Shi You 201, with a length of 204.65 meters and width of 39.2 meters, not only deploys world-leading offshore engineering technology, but also marks the first self-design and self-build deepwater offshore engineering vessel project in China, advancing the nations deepwater resources exploration strategy. As the flagship of CNOOCs deepwater exploration fleet, the vessel is planned to arrive at the Liwan 3-1 gas field in June. It is to collaborate with Hai Yang Shi You 981, the deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform which started production in early May, and will prepare for pipelaying works. This collaboration marks the beginning of the practical stage of deepwater resources exploration for China. Hai Yang Shi You 201 addresses a shortcoming in Chinas extraction of natural resources in deepwater areas. Together with other deepwater apparatus owned by CNOOC, the DPV extends CNOOCs development capability from a water depth of 300 meters to that of 3, 000 meters.
