Charlie Mingus born 22 April 1922 in Nogales Arizona. His early influences in music were singing in a choir and listening to Duke Ellington on the radio age 8.He played double bass, piano was a composer and Bandleader. In the forties he was in New York playing with Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton.He soon found he was at the front of the avant garde.His records were 'Pithecanthropus erectus' 'TheClown' 'Tijuana Moods', 'Mingus Moods', Mingus Ah Um' and 'Let My Children Hear Music'. He toured extensively throughout Japan Europe and America, His autbiography 'Beneath the underdog' was written in 1971. He also played the piano and wrote musical ballets. He died in Mexico aged 56 on 5 Jan 1979 and his ashes were scattered on The Ganges in India as well as in New York and Washington.
