Deltic diesel-electric locomotive D9009 'Alycidon' number in close up along with the British Railways rampant lion and wheel insignia commonly as the 'Ferret and Dartboard'. This is the second type of emblem used by British Railways from 1956 to 1968. The Deltics, as they were commonly known, were the most powerful diesel locomotive introduced on British Railways following the 1955 modernisation plan. From 1961 to 1978 they hauled the flagship London to Edinburgh service on the East Coast Main Line, before being replaced by the then new Intercity 125 High Speed Train. The Deltics were then used on non-express services until final withdrawal in 1981. Six have been privately preserved in running order out of an original fleet of twenty-two.
