The U.S.S. Indianapolis at its commissioning ceremony on Oct. 26, 2019. Construction began on the Freedom Class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) in 2016 culminating its formal commissioning over three years later. The 387-foot long warship is the fifth ship commissioned into service as the U.S.S. Indianapolis. Its most famous predecessor was the third such ship, a cruiser that served in the Pacific during World War II which was sunk by a Japanese submarine during the final stages of the war. Of the crew of nearly 1, 200, 900 survived the sinking, however, those survivors due to being in the sea for three days suffered significant further losses. Only 316 members of the original crew survived the ordeal. Four of those survivors were in attendance at the commissioning. The U.S.S. Indianapolis was the first naval ship ever commissioned on the Great Lakes.
