Burano is one of the small islands dotted around the Venetian lagoon near Venice and Torcello in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Burano is known for its lace-making, and its primary economy is tourism because of the island’s quaint picturesque narrow pedestrian-free streets, alongside narrow canals lined with brightly coloured former fishermen’s houses on either side. It's said that several hundred years ago, whilst fishing in poor visibility such as the swirling sea mist, fishermen painted their houses in bright colours so that they could be seen from a distance. Burano still retains the largest community of local fishermen and continues to replenish the island’s restaurants. To supplement their income, they also offer fishing tours. Burano is thought to have been founded in the 5th century by refugees from the Roman city of Altino, fleeing from the Barbarians. Some settled in near Murano to set up the world-renowned Murano Glass.
