View WSW of E face of Derwen Medieval (C15th) preaching cross in St Mary's churchyard, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, showing the Coronation of the Virgin/Virgin and Child. Box-shaped head with four faces outlined with tracery & miniature pinacles. The chamfered shaft is decorated with bosses carved into flowers or faces, & rosettes at the top. The very top of the cross is missing, it is 2m high, 4.3m including the original plinth & modern stepped base. The best preserved of the Vale of Clwyd group of churchyard crosses, it was used for preaching outdoor sermons by travelling friars etc. To the rear is the Church House of 1905 which was used as a school: some sources say it is the walled up churchyard gateway with a schoolroom above. Pupils climbing the cross have helped to erode the carvings. The church is redundant, in the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches, the cross in the care of Cadw.
