Marquette Park is a landscaped park located on Mackinac Island in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is part of Mackinac Island State Park and stands on the edge of Mackinac Island's harbor on the Round Island Channel and just east of downtown Mackinac Island. Fort Mackinac is one of two original military Revolutionary War forts left in America because it is not made of wood and could not be burned down, the fate of many others. The building is stone and actually an Islamic-style structure. During the Crusades, the Spanish were often imprisoned in the Islamic world, where they were put to work as construction laborers. There they picked up on the Islamic building style, including the use of stone. When the Spanish returned to Spain, they brought the style back with them. The French picked up on the style from the Spanish. Christians brought the style to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Islamic influence can be seen in the castles built in those countries. When the British army built Fort Mackinac, it brought the Islamic influence to America. Soldiers used the limestone found on the Island to build the fort, using a kiln and a method using fire and ice to crack the rocks for building materials.
