Caption: Udaipur, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. The sprawling residence (two wings of which are now used as hotels, and another as a museum) of the Maharana of Mewar, as seen from the colonnades of the Lake Palace, another of the Maharana's properties. Princes once renowned for their extravagant pomp and spending, once dethroned and stripped of land, were allowed to keep their palaces. Deprived of the taxes they collected from farmers and villagers, they had to convert their stately homes into tourist ventures to avoid bankruptcy.
