Imported wines accounted for 11.8 percent of China s consumption in 2008, with France being the largest overseas supplier, according to figures released by Hong Kong-based Vinexpo, organizer of one of the world s largest wine and spirits conferences. While Chinese purchases of homegrown wine increased 67 percent from 2004 to 2008, consumption of imported brands quadrupled over the same period. In the future, the wine market in China will prosper with rising appreciation for wine and the combining forces of urbanization and globalization in the society. In order to get a larger share of the expanding cake, French wineries are setting up long-term strategies, such as popularizing wine culture and localizing their product to suit Chinese consumers.
