Bateman's, a 17th century Ironmaster's house near the Burwash in East Sussex. It was the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 until his death in 1936. These images were taken from the road that passes in front of the house. The house dates from 1634. It was probably an ironmaster's house (the Sussex Weald was once famous for its iron production) but some maintain it was built by an iron dealer rather than a manufacturer. Kipling favoured the builder was John Britten, a Sussex Ironmaster. Kiling's wife Carrie, continued to live at Batemans until her death in 1939 and she left the house and surrounding land to the National Trust. The house is a Grade 1 Listed Building and is extremely popular with visitors. The house contains a number of rooms filled with Kipling memorabilia, including his study where he produced some of his most famous works. Bateman's was also the home of Kipling's son John, who was killed at the Battle of Loos in September 1915. John was the subject of the film "My Boy Jack." His name is recorded on the war memorial in the village of Burwash.
