Skull r(l I loins of Gnyal. From Mr. A. O. Humes specimen. i?.-DOMESTICATED BREED or GAYAL. The gayal is a rather smaller animal than the wild gaur, nearlyblack in colour, with a large dewlap, and a straight line between thebases of the massive horns, which are but little divergent, curvedupwards, nearly cylindrical in section, and of dark colour. The headis short, with the forehead broad and flat. The gayal, or mithan, isa domesticated breed of the gaur, probably derived from the Malay andTenasserim race of the latter. Distribution.—Kept in a semi-domesticated condition by many of thehill-tribes of Assam, Chittagong, etc. Length onoutside curve. Circum-ference. Tip to ri| 1. Locality.
