The Holybourne stream rises close to the church, runs into the pond, through the village & then into the River Wey. The waters of the chalk spring were considered to have healing properties, especially for eye complaints. The spring is one of the very few holy wells mentioned by name in the Domesday Book of 1086; then know as Haliborne thought to derive from the Old English Haligburna meaning sacred stream. A reputedly pagan well Christianized by the building of the church in the C12th. The nave, W end & lower part of the tower are all C12th, the chancel was added by the C13th & the N aisle replaced in 1879. In the C15th the floor of the church was raised, possible because of the underlying springs, & there are still traceable springs beneath the altar & W end of the nave.
