Aug. 08, 1977 - Crash Kills Dr.Peter Goldmark, Scientist Who Invented LP Disk: Dr Peter Carl Goldmark, whose invention of the long-playing phonograph record for CBS revolutionized the recorded-music industry, was killed yesterday in an automobile accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County. He was 71 years old. According to the county police, Dr. Goldmark was driving alone toward New York City around 7:30 AM. Near the Lincoln Avenue exit, between Harrison and Rye, Dr.Goldmark's car caught the front bumper of another car while changing lanes, spun around and collided broadside with the second car. Dr.Goldmark was thrown from his car and apparently was killed instantly. Dr.Goldmark, who lived in Stamford, Conn., was pronounced dead on arrival at the United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y. The police said that the driver of the second car, Fred Weh, also of Connecticut, suffered a slight cut on a hand that did not require medical attention. Awarded Medal of Science: Two weeks ago the Hungarian born Dr.Goldmark, who became a United States Citizen in 1937, received the National Medal of Science from President Carter, along with 14 other scientists at a White House ceremony. The citation honored him for having developed communications sciences for education, entertainment and culture. It covered not only his work on the long-playing record, a rotating-disk method for color television broadcasting that was almost adopted by the Federal Communications Commission and the so-called electronic video recording technology for viewing recorded film cassettes on television screens, but also his work in late years on the adapting of advanced communications to allow greater dispersion of population into the country side. Surviving are his third wife, Diane and their two children Jonathan and Susan; four children by a previous marriage Frances Massey, Christopher, Andrew and Peter C. Jr., Executive Director of Port Authority of New York and New. Peter C. Goldmark, in
