Datsun first went international rallying with the Bluebird and Cedric saloons in the early 1960s, scoring its first major success in 1966 when the Bluebird won its class in the Safari Rally. The first Datsun to make an impact on the European stage was the 240Z, a large, front-engined, rear-drive, six-cylinder coupé that was hailed as spiritual successor to the ‘Big Healey’. The ‘Z’ possessed similar virtues too, being fast in a straight line, sturdily built and ultra reliable, and was at its best in events where these factors mattered most. The car’s greatest successes was its two outright wins in the Safari Rally in 1971 and 1973, The Fairlady 240Z, also known as the export model name “Datsun 240Z”, participated in famous “Rallye Monte-Carlo” mainly on snowy and icy roads. In the 41st Rallye Monte-Carlo, the 240Z finished third, which surprised rally concerned people all over the world. The reason is that 240Z adopted the FR (front engine / rear wheel drive) system with the engine mounted in front. The FR system was thought to be disadvantageous on snow and ice, but the result betrayed the prediction. As a result, more and more drivers began driving Z-car at domestic rallies. This car is the one that finished third at the 41st Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1972 by Rauno Aaltonen and Jean Todt.
