In the background, the decommissioned STEAG coal-fired power plant Voerde. The estuary of the Emscher into the Rhine was relocated from Dinslaken by almost 500 meters north to Voerde. Fish can now swim up the new Emscher from the Rhine without barriers through a newly created floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022, when a parallel sewer was built.
