01/09/11 ...Members of a sailing club are being left high and dry as the water they sail on drops further away from their club house every day...Water levels at Carsington Water Reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in Britain, have been falling all summer. Carsington Sailing Club Commodore, Tony Nicholson said: "We accept it as part of the sailing club - the reservoir wasn't built just for us to sail on. But it's a real irritation - we've got to get our boats to the water and it's getting further away - the weed is a bit a problem..."We had a drought about 15 years ago. The water level dropped then too, so we made a new concrete slipway to help get our boats to the water. I didn't expect to ever see it again but it coming out of the water again now..."Normally the reservoir's full at this time of year. There are no rivers feeding so it only fills up with rain water or when water is pumped back uphill from Ogston Reservoir."..Carsington Water, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire, is part of a 'water compensation' scheme. This means that water is pumped here from the River Derwent at times of high rainfall, stored in the reservoir and returned to the Derwent when the river level would otherwise be too low to allow water extraction for treatment (and drinking) further downstream.
