02/04/2012...Kings Lock near Leicester is chained and padlocked shut - this is the most northerly section of the canal to be effected by the closures...A reservoir that feeds a section of canal has so little water that the waterway is now only open for six hours each day. And the canal will close completely in two weeks unless significant rainfall raises the water level...Last month the 11 mile section of the Grand Union Canal south of Leicester was drained so the lock gates could all be re-lined to reduce leakage. But the first boats to venture through the refilled canal today kept getting stuck in the silty shallows. More water needed to be flushed through the lock gates to re-float the floundering narrow-boats which were stuck for nearly three hours...Waterlevels at nearby Saddington reservoir, have fallen to under half empty. ..To conserve water the locks are now padlocked shut for 18 hours a day between Kings Lock and Kibworth Top Lock, and will be closed completely from 13 April...Stephen Hardy, from British Waterways, said: "At the moment we have got a set amount of water that we've got to try and make last as long as possible..."If it rains then fantastic, the amount of water available might allow us to relax restrictions in certain places.".."Until last year we have not had any significant closures because of drought, certainly in the Midlands, for decades really, " he said...The same stretch of canal was restricted towards the end of the 2011 boating season, but Mr Hardy said restrictions were rare...Last year's restrictions meant that the stretch was closed to non-essential boating traffic, such as leisure boaters...However all boats will be affected this time, including those which people live in...All Rights Reserved - F Stop Press. www.fstoppress.com.
